Description

Gum 15, also known as RCW32, is in the constellation Vela and about 3000 light years away.

A beautifully detailed nebula that’s shaped by the interstellar winds throughout. The presence of a bright star cluster also adds to the magic! While mostly an emission nebula (Hα only), there is some reflection nebulosity present that’s seen as gentle streaks of blue/magenta streaking across the nebula.

Near the larger RCW 27 complex, this nebula is probably ionized by the B-class multiple star HD 74804, the brightest member of the Collinder 197 star cluster.

Represented in HαRGB (natural color but with the details and contrast of Hα).
